Date: 16th September 2016

Location: Melton Mowbray Livestock Market, LE13 1JY

A Texel shearling ram from Barbara Smith of Slapton, Northamptonshire, topped the trade at 31st annual NSA Eastern Region Ram Sale.

Her strong, well-fleshed tup was knocked down for 1,000gns to K.A. Gill from Burton Lazars, Leicestershire.

Other rams from the same pen were sold for 800gns and 760gns twice, while a Charollais cross Texel shearling also from Mrs Smith finished the day selling for 820gns.

Next in the prices was a Charollais shearling ram from Jonathan and Carrroll Barber’s Crogham flock in Norfolk. Their outstanding ram by Loanhead Monarch of the Glen went for 940gns to Clark Bros, Skillington, Lincolnshire.

The quality of the Texel shearlings forward was excellent with the top 30 animals selling for more £600. Demand was also strong for well-fleshed Charollais, including for the champion pen of rams from C.D. Timm of Appleton Roebuck, Yorkshire. The pen of four averaged £761 with the top of £861 going to A. Spendlove of Heath, Derbyshire. Local Texel breeder Tessa Bustance had a great day, selling her seven Texel shearling rams to average £683.

Suffolk tups were a bit harder to trade with regular consignor Shelia Eggleston topping the section at 700gns for a shearling ram sold to Easton College, Norfolk. The winning pen of ram lambs was in the Suffolk section, with Liz Needham selling the best for 480gns to B.L. Burton Farms of Rempstone, Nottinghamshire.

Auctioneer Tom Greenow submitted a final average price of £511.72.
