Regional Report 5th April 2010N.I. Regional Report 5th April 2010 They say March ‘comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb’; unfortunately here in N. Ireland we were counting the number of lambs the ‘lion’ took with him. Surprise snow blizzards, floods and winds left a trial of devastation in its wake. The good prices for Easter lamb leaves us counting the costs of the worst Easter in memory. We have a commitment from North/South Ministerial meetings of their support for an All Island Animal Health & Welfare Strategy. If this strategy is taken forward in the proper manner it can only be good for the sheep industry with less bureaucracy in the north/south movement of sheep. There are a number of sheep related items available in Tranche 2 of the Farm Modernisation Programme; let’s hope sheep farmers meet the criteria to allow them to avail of this funding. The Red Meat Task Force has run it’s course and is now metamorphing into a Red Meat Strategy Forum which we hope will keep all sectors of the food chain communicating and co-operating – or is that too much to ask for? It’s reassuring to hear of a new weapon in our fight against parasites but we must use it sparingly and carefully to maximise benefit and longevity.
