NSA Marches Region Next Generation training and competition day

NSA Marches Region invites young sheep farming enthusiasts and those keen to learn more about a potential career as a shepherd or shepherdess to its NSA Next Generation Shepherds training and competition day on Sunday 4th July at Overbury Estates, Gloucestershire, by kind permission of Overbury Estates.

The day gives keen young shepherds the opportunity to view interesting and interactive demonstrations, to have a go at some basic shepherding tasks and more. And for those already with a good level of experience working with sheep there is the opportunity to compete in the regional heat of the NSA Next Generation Shepherd of the Year competition.

The Next Generation Shepherd of the year competition is a a highly regarded contest with national finals taking place next year at NSA Sheep Event 2022, Three Counties Showground, Malvern, Worcestershire. Competitors compete for a slice of a £2000 prize pot, kindly donated by competition sponsors The Texel Sheep Society. Successful finalists have also gone on to represent the UK at the international shepherding finals in Paris!

The competition is free to enter and open to 18 to 26-year-olds (But all ages are welcome on the day!) with some practical and theoretical knowledge of sheep work. The upper age limit for competitors is 26, as they must be aged under 27 on the day of the event finals at NSA Sheep Event on Wednesday 27th July 2022.

The elements competitors will be expected to complete are as follows: ( 5 out of 6 need to be completed)

  • ATV Handling
  • Ewe selection
  • Sheep Health Questionnaire
  • Sheep Handling Tasks
  • Sheep Shearing (competitors must have a British Wool blue seal to take part in this element)
  • Lamb selection

 

The NSA Marches Region training and competition day is an informal and enjoyable day for all young sheep farmers. Refreshments will be provided with several local trade stands offering advice and new products to view and learn more about.
