NSA South West Ram Sale

Ram Sale Report

The auctioneers reported that buyers were looking for powerful, quality rams and were prepared to pay for them but trade for others was a little slower.

Topping the sale at 2,100gns was the Texel show champion – a shearling ram from Phil and Lesley Martyn-Uglow who sold others at 1,300 1,050 and 950 with a 100% clearance of their 15 entered.  Malcolm and Kim Coumbe sold at 1,250 and 950. The Chave family were near the end of the sale but as usual had a good trade selling to 1,150 and 950. Georgie Hellyer’s long trip was rewarded with a top price of 1,150 and sale chairman Robert Jordan and family sold to 1,000 gns. Sale stalwarts the Quick family sold to 950.

A Suffolk ram lamb from Robert Hopper led the way in that ring with 2,000gns and the shearlings were topped at 1,300 for one from EW Quick and family and Miss N Hartwright and another at 1,150.  Henry Derryman and family topped at 950 and had a 100% clearance as did Andrew and Wendy Reed who topped at 850. Robin Irwin sold a ram lamb for 900gns.

Chartex rams led the way in the cross bred ring at 950gns from the Quick family who also topped the Charollais ring at 1,200gns. Close behind them was the show champion Gerald Burrough at 1,000 gns.

A Beltex shearling from Lorna Gregory sold for 1,000gns and a Border Leicester shearling from MJ & VM Pile created a new breed record at the sale of 1,600gns. Shearling ewes from Sue Martyn sold to 680gns.

Dutch Spotted sheep were welcomed to the sale for the first time with females being sold to 600gns.

Lleyns sold to 600gns and in the Non MV ring MC & KD Yeo sold to 750gns for their Berrichons.
