NSA Breakfast Club webinar: A view from the opposition – an hour with the Shadow Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs – Daniel Zeichner

Date: 10th January 2023

Time: 8.30am

Location: Online

Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_hOQ_uegARumSfj7zlK-jmg

This webinar is a unique opportunity to hear directly from the Labour oppositions Shadow Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs – Daniel Zeichner.

There have been significant recent parliamentary changes and turbulence amongst the current Government and Cabinet. In the last 12 months the agriculture industry has said goodbye to longstanding Secretary of State George Eustice and farming Minister Victoria Prentis, and in Liz Truss’s reign as Prime Minister welcomed Ranil Jayawardena along with Mark Spencer as the new Defra Minister of State (Farming Minister). This short intervention then changed again with Rishi Sunak appointing Therese Coffey as Secretary of State although Mark Spencer still retains his position as farming Minister.  The future political situation looks uncertain hence the role of the Labour Party, as Govt in waiting or as a stronger opposition looks of increasing importance.

Mr Zeichner came to the role of shadow Minister for Environment Food and Rural Affairs in January 2020, before that he represented on the Science and Technology Committee and previously took up the role as Shadow Minister for Transport. Labour have stated that they would work with the farming industry, food producers and voluntary sector to achieve ‘sustainable intensification’ – higher crop yields and more efficient production whilst recognising the importance of the environment within sustainable production.

Join us in this webinar to put your questions to the Labour Minister and learn how he is working to represent British Agriculture along with key priorities from a potential labour government.

In this webinar you’ll hear Mr Zeichner’s own priorities and goals for agriculture, land management and the environment in England and gain a unique insight into where sheep farming might be headed in the years to come. Mr Zeichner has pressed government hard on recent supply chain crises and the need to make, buy and sell more in Britain.

There will opportunity to pose your own questions along with an option to pre-submit questions.
