Introduction to Shearing and Sheep Husbandry autumn workshop

NSA is pleased to invite those with little to no experience of sheep shearing to it's autumn workshop. Held on Wednesday 27th September, at Fernhill Farm, Bristol, BS40 6LD by kind permission of Andy Wear and Jen Hunter.
Aimed at those with a basic or no experience of sheep shearing and other associated sheep husbandry skills. The day will give an introduction to blade and machine shearing with a hands-on approach, including learning when the best time is to shear sheep, the importance of preparing a handling area, catching and getting a sheep into the right position for shearing and well as the opportunity to have a go at shearing yourself under supervision and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions throughout the day.
Workshops will be led by experienced Instructors, who are qualified with the British Wool.
Minimum age 16.
Day to last from approximately 10am to 4pm.
A free lunch will be provided, kindly sponsored by British Wool.
The day will be spent outside but undercover, so please check the weather forecast, and the day could involve some physical activity, so please dress accordingly including suitable footwear.
Those that are not sure about shearing themselves are still welcome to attend.
The key areas that will be featured during the day are as follows:
- Introduction to machine shearing and blade shearing to include how to prepare the shearing area, how to prepare and maintain the shearing equipment and the correct handling techniques for both the welfare of the sheep and you.
- Sheep Husbandry skills – Handling and basic health care, including dagging and how to look after dagging equipment and how to spot and treat common problems, such as flystrike.
- British Wool –Discussion on the different types of wool and their qualities.
- Jen Hunter – Making the most of wool.
