NSA Eastern Region Melton Mowbray Ram Sale 2017

A tremendous show of rams was forward at the 32nd Annual Ram Sale held at Melton Mowbray Market on Friday 15th September 2017.

The Champion pen of rams judged on the day were Charollais shearling rams from Mitchel Britten and Elizabeth Barber from Wymondham in Norfolk.  They were awarded the Melton Borough Council salver by the Mayor, Councillor Baines who support this annual event. Trade for their pen of 5 was strong and topped at 850 gns and finished on an average of £768.60. The top priced ram was purchased by K A Gill, Burton Lazars and the other four went to Burton Farms Ltd, Rempstone. 

Also selling at 850 gns was another Charollais shearling tup, this time from C D Timm from Appleton Roebuck, Yorkshire. Buyer for this ram was W T Carr & Sons, Loughborough.

Top Charollais ram lamb price was 480 gns for one from Jonathan and Carroll Barber’s Crogham Flock, which sold to A & R Fyfe.    

Trade for Texel tups was consistent and buoyant throughout the lots with a top of 820 gns going to Barbara Smith, Towcester, Northants. Her 4 shearling rams finished on an average of £782.25. The flock also took the NSA Trophy for the Best Pen of Ram Lambs and went on to achieve the highest-priced lamb at 590 gns and average £559.13 for four sold. 

Other top pens of Texel came from regular vendors R R & M Lawrence whose smart, well-fleshed tups finished on an average of £593.00 for 8 sold to a top of 780 gns.

A smaller entry of Suffolk tups found better trade than in previous years with a top of 850 gns for a shearling ram from David Inman. The 1st prize for Suffolk shearling and rams lambs went to Shelia Eggleston from Walton-on-the-Wolds, Leicestershire. Her trade topped at 640 gns for shearlings and 400 gns for ram lambs. Two Suffolk ram lambs from John Key, Sheffield topped the section at 440 gns apiece. 

A small section for cross-bred tups was topped at 700 gns for a Charollais x Beltex shearling ram from C D Timm.

                                    15 ram lambs sold to a top of 440 gns, average £371.33

Texel                           43 shearlings sold to a top of 820 gns, average £563.83

                                    13 lambs sold to a top of 590 gns, average £392.54
