British heritage sheep - New tastes from old traditions

18th September 2017

By Bob Kennard, NSA Mutton Consultant

NSA, working with many industry organisations, has secured the additional funding needed to explore consumption opportunities for UK heritage sheep breeds connected to landscapes and specific products.

A grant from the Prince’s Countryside Fund will be added to monies raised by 18 organisations involved in the sheep industry supply chain to enable a feasibility study to go ahead. The primary aim of the work is looking at promoting the diversity of sheep meat in the UK. By expanding the consumer choice beyond simply the commodity of standard lamb, the work will seek to find ways of increasing availability of heritage breeds, as well as promoting the unique landscapes of the UK, and meat from older hogget and mutton.

As part of the initial stage of this work, views of all interested parties are being sought. An online questionnaire will take about 15 minutes to complete, and can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/heritagebreeds.

More background information on the work can be seen downloaded at the bottom of this page.  For more information about, contact Bob Kennard at mutton@nationalsheep.org.uk
