NSA encourages letters of support for border control post in Calais

19th March 2021

The National Sheep Association (NSA) have been made aware that Mr Drique, the owner and operator of Qualivia, has applied to Brussels for Border Control Status at his premises in Calais. Mr Drique has suggested that letters of support would be most appreciated and would assist him with said application.

NSA sent a letter of support to Mr Drique on Thursday this week to support his application, which can be read below.

NSA feels it is important Mr Drique receives as many letters of support possible so, breed societies and other interested parties are encouraged to send their own letter using NSA’s letter as a guide if they wish.

Dear Mr Drique,

The National Sheep Association (NSA) is a specialist membership association for sheep farmers and British based sheep breed societies. We would like to acknowledge and strongly support your application to Brussels for live animal Border Control Status at your premises in Calais.

At the time of writing there are no seaports either side of the channel with facilities to take live sheep or lambs (or other livestock). We are aware of several plans in place here in Britain, or being discussed, with estimated timelines from July 2021 at the earliest. In the meantime we have temporary arrangements to allow live animals to enter the UK. Without a live animal border control post on the EU side of the short straights channel we are unable to transport live animals from the UK to the EU and this is causing serious concern both here in Britain, with many sheep farmers having strong demand from farmers in the EU, but also concern from EU farmers who are unable to get access to the genetics they want.

Therefore, your application is extremely important and gratefully welcomed for the continued trade for sheep farmers both here in Great Britain and in the EU. It would allow the ongoing development of breeding strategies and genetic improvements for a number of important sheep breeds throughout the continent.

If you need any further information or details in support, please do not hesitate to contact me.

With best wishes.

Yours sincerely,
Phil Stocker
Chief Executive
