Looking for students that are keen and willing to learn about lambing our flock of 200 commercials (150 beltex x texel & 50 mule x) and 50 pedigree texels, no prior experience needed (1 week minimum placements). This is a good opportunity to work in a commercial and pedigree environment working alongside our family but also given chances to work independently. As well as lambing, other tasks and skills gained will include medical administration, pedigree performance recording, tail docking, castrating, tagging, and using current technology (EID reader) (training will be provided for each of these areas if appropriate and shown competence). Past work experience volunteers have been provided with good references for university applications/further placements and jobs. Farmhouse accommodation and cooked meals provided (dietary requirements can be met), need to be willing to mix with family and dogs. Thanks for reading.

East Midlands, Leicestershire Outdoor Lambing System We run a 1,000 acre estate with a focus on Regenerative Agriculture working to increase biodiversity, enrich our soil, improve watersheds and enhance the ecosystem. As an integral part of this system we have 450 Innovis Highlander Ewes on a pasture fed system who lamb outdoors. We are looking for an additional pair of hands for April – we can be relatively flexible on the dates and would be open to both applicants who could work for a continuous period and those who could do odd weeks or weekends. This opportunity would suit someone willing to experience lambing and learn lambing principles. An interest in regenerative, sustainable or conservation agriculture would be an advantage. Prior lambing experience is not necessary as full training will be offered, it's hard work and very rewarding. Accommodation and meals can be provided in our family home.

Last year was our worst on record for lamb mortality. Was it just the weather? Pre-lambing ewe feeding? Under-staffing? Mineral deficiency? If you’re the sort of person that likes to get hands-on and stuck into the job come rain or shine, mud, muck and afterbirth then come and help us find out what went wrong last year and make sure 2019 is our best lambing on record. Two or three weeks. Lambing pedigree Lleyn and commercial Lleyn cross ewes, two thirds lambed outdoors on a drift system and the remainder indoors, you will learn and carry out the following tasks; assisting ewes lambing, lamb resuscitation and care, lamb fostering (wet and skinning), lamb tagging, recording, tailing, marking and castrating. Moving, catching and injecting ewes, cleaning out and bedding pens, feeding and caring for cade lambs, feeding ewes and looking for signs of ill health, treating hypothermic lambs etc. Paid role based on how quick you learn and how hard you work, room available in farmhouse if required. It would help if you knew one end of a sheep from the other, but not essential as you will soon learn! Call today for an informal chat, the mobile number is best to catch me on but the reception is not great so leave a message or keep trying.
