We are looking for students to help lamb our Welsh ewes. No experience necessary but a sense of adventure, desire to learn and a sense of humour would come in handy! We need help with the indoor lambing, including caring for the pens, turning out ewes and lambs, working with orphan lambs as well as some outdoor lambing. Working as part of a close knit team you will be given responsibilities as you learn, all the while knowing that support is close to hand. We will teach you all we can with regards lambing but you need to bring with you the ability to observe and tell us what you see, to listen and to question as well as the ability to move - none of our ewes will wait for you to catch them! Breeds mostly consist of Suffolk's X ewes with 100 Cambridge X ewes and 200 Welsh ewes. High lambing percentage with 50 triplets lambed most years. 90 early Lambers to start from the 01/03. 350 ewes to start from the 24/03 with a further 200 Welsh ewes from the 28/03 and 200 ewe lambs starting at the beginning of April. On previous years we have lambed inside however with an increasing in joint-ill cases some may be lambed outside depending on the weather. Hoping to have a student with some experience of other farm setups during lambing so we can learn from each other during this busy period.

We lamb 1200 ewes which are Welsh Mountain ewes or texel crosses from that breed. The lambing shed is modern with totally up to date systems for lambing. You will work with experienced people (the farmer and shepherds) and will be shown what to do at all times. You will be involved in every aspect of the lambing experience, assisting with birthing lambs as needed, feeding, bottling, ear marking, castrating, tail docking etc as well as general duties with the ewes. We will supervise at all times so that you never feel uncertain about your work. We appreciate that you will not know everything and teach you as you go. Toilet and washing facilities are available on the farmyard. We offer free accommodation in a totally modernised farm bungalow equipped to the highest standard (view it at the website of Sykes Cottages.) The bungalow has 2 bedrooms with ensuite shower rooms, each bedroom has king size double beds, so if you are willing to bunk up with a friend we can take more than 2 students at a time. We need lambing assistants from the 28th March for about a month, so can take students willing to do the month or shorter periods such as a fortnight, with other students joining us in the middle of the lambing period. You will be given a detailed induction before you start work. We are happy to work with your colleges in arranging placements. During your time with us you will be covered by our standard farm insurance policies.
