NSA issues stark warning of potential consequences of Australia deal to the UK’s sheep industry
The National Sheep Association (NSA) is warning again that without proper scrutiny into the terms of the Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) damaging consequences for the UK sheep industry will be difficult to avoid. NSA believes there is still time for a supportive government to consider the safeguards necessary and ensure adequate measures in the FTA to avoid market disruption and the undermining of all our aspirations for high standards for animal health and welfare, and the farmed environment.

Opportunity for two individuals to travel within UK, Italy, Spain and Turkey to learn more about organic production systems.
As part of its involvement in an Erasmus e-Organic international research project, NSA is providing the opportunity for two individuals to visit farms and research institutes in the UK, Spain, Italy and Turkey. The study trips will cover all types of organic livestock systems, including sheep, and are almost fully funded by the project.

NSA raises heightened concerns over the direction of Australian trade deal
The National Sheep Association (NSA) is increasingly concerned that despite requests and pleas from the UK Agriculture sector, a deal with Australia that potentially sacrifices the UK’s farming and food industries looks likely to be completed. The announcement this morning (Tuesday) that the two Prime Ministers have reached a broad agreement brings real fears of the consequences that this deal will have on the nation’s sheep farming sector.

Plans to improve powers to deal with livestock worrying cases welcomed, but proposals could go further, says NSA
The National Sheep Association (NSA) welcomes any strengthening of legislation on livestock worrying by dogs, however, the sheep farming association believes that strengthening police powers to seize dogs should have been further backed up by a significant increase in the maximum fines that could be imposed.

“Time to keep local farmers on the menu”, says NSA
As lockdown easing continues, including the recent reopening of indoor hospitality, the National Sheep Association (NSA) is now stressing the importance of a continued “buy local” philosophy amongst UK consumers. A new appreciation for the role of local farm shops and butchers was experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic as shoppers turned to them as concerns were heightened over personal safety in larger, busier stores and certain products became hard to source.
