NSA welcomes move towards greater protection against livestock worrying in Scotland
NSA Scottish Region is pleased to congratulate Emma Harper MSP on her members bill passed by Scottish Parliament last week, securing greater protection for farmers affected by livestock worrying. This Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) (Scotland) bill modernises and strengthens legislation regarding attacks on livestock.

Established sheep breeder wins NSA membership
National Sheep Association (NSA) member Anthony Edgley of Oakhanger Farm, Cheshire is the lucky winner of a free year’s NSA membership following the association’s latest prize giveaway. Anthony, who is an established and successful pedigree Beltex sheep breeder wins the year’s membership after he was selected following the competition earlier this year.

NSA calls for beef and sheep levy board to listen to sector voices
Following news this week that other farming sectors have voted against continuing their statutory levy (The potato sector voted 66% in favour of abolishing its levy, with the horticultural sector voting 61% in favour of its abolishment) questions are now being raised over the future of other farming sectors’ levy boards, including the beef and sheep levy board in England.

NSA warns of imminent problems over unlevel playing field of UK breeding animal trade
The National Sheep Association (NSA) is today warning that the current inability to move breeding sheep to the EU will soon bite as the sheep breeding season progresses. NSA Chief Executive Phil Stocker comments: “With the UK Government easing controls on imports from the EU until the end of the year and into 2022, we are seeing no reciprocal decisions from the EU and it feels as though our negotiating hand is being given away.

Respected sheep farmer recognised with prestigious award
The National Sheep Association (NSA) has announced the posthumous winner of the George Hedley Memorial Award as Cumbrian sheep farmer and passionate voice for lamb consumption Rachel Lumley. Rachel farmed near Penrith, Cumbria, and was the driving force behind the now well-established and successful Love Lamb Week that takes place at the beginning of September each year.

NSA Scotland Members are reminded of the protocols when carrying out Muirburn and that they have less than one month within the standard season which comes to an end on 15 April 2021. NSA Breakfast Club pauses for lambing break
As a method of providing timely updates to the nations sheep farmers, the National Sheep Association’s (NSA) ‘Breakfast Club’ that launched at the beginning of 2021 has attracted industry leaders delivering interesting webinars to engaged audiences. The successful series has so far covered topics ranging from an update on UK sheep farming policy by Farming Minister Victoria Prentis to an exploration of sheep farming across the globe from two young enthusiastic sheep farmers having completed study tours.

New Entrant Laura Hinnekins Hailed A Success Story with NSA Scotland Members Andy and Lyn Barr
Laura Hinnekens aged 31, came to Scotland from Belgium nearly 5 years ago with her car and a pack of dogs. However, having just graduated in Agronomy she continues to have many challenges in front of her. After being employed on a hill farm, she became self employed and built up a network of farms where she lambed, gathered and carried out general sheep work.
