New intake of sheep farming ambassadors wanted as inaugural group complete year of training
Around 75 young people in the sheep sector came together yesterday (Wednesday 12th November) for an ‘Inspiring the Next Generation’ conference and farm walk near Cirencester, Gloucestershire, The one-day event marked the culmination of the first year of the NSA Next Generation Ambassador Programme, which has seen 11 ambitious young sheep farmers from around the UK come together for a series of personal development and sheep skills delivery sessions.

UK success at World Young Shepherd Challenge
There was plenty of cause for celebration among the UK competitors in the World Young Shepherds Challenge in France on Wednesday. England took top prize in the team and senior individual sections of the competition, which saw 31 young hopefuls from 16 nations put through their shepherding paces.

Retailers snubbing UK producers and denying consumers quality, seasonal food, says NSA
Food imports are an important tool to provide shoppers with choice all year around, but there is no doubt that a British strawberry in summer is better than an imported one at Christmas. Cherries, asparagus and other home-produced foods are equally lauded when they come into season, so why not lamb, asks the National Sheep Association? “Most sheep in the UK lamb over a four-month period in the spring and many come to the market between July and December – this is our seasonal harvest where availability and quality come together,” explains Phil Stocker, NSA Chief Executive.

Urgent warning for driving farm lorries
This Wednesday (10th September) is the date on which ‘grandfather rights’ for lorry drivers expire unless you have completed 35 hours of periodic training in the last five years. This is an incredibly complex area of European legislation that applies to professional lorry and bus drivers that unfortunately implicates farmers too.

Scottish winner at NSA Young Shepherd of the Year National Final
18 year old Euan Orr, Tarbrax, West Calder came out triumphant yesterday at NSA Sheep 2014 at Malvern by winning the Young Shepherd of the Year National final. David McLean from Reston, Berwickshire who was also representing Scotland was 9th overall out of the 20 competitors.
