NSA voucher giveaway 2016: Gloria Jones, Swansea

When Welsh farmer Gloria Jones recommended her daughter to become a member of NSA, a reward of a £200 JG Animal Health voucher was the last thing on her mind. However, this became a reality when she was announced a one of the three winners in the first of NSA’s bimonthly prize draws.
NSA has teamed up with FecpakG2, Cox Agri/Ritchey and JG Animal Health to give away three £200 vouchers at a free prize draw giveaway every other month in 2016. New NSA members are automatically entered into the draw, as well as existing members who have recommend a friend or neighbour to sign up to NSA.
Delighted at the news she was a winner, Gloria, who farms at Felindre, Swansea, says she is looking forward to putting it to good use. She explains the origins of her flock: “After establishing my own flock with 15 Welsh Mountain ewes, I went on to purchase my first two Badger Face ewes which proved to be the foundation of my pedigree Badger Face flock. I now maintain 70 Welsh Mountain and 30 Badger Face ewes, plus 30 ewe lambs, on my father’s smallholding. I also farm 500 improved Welsh and Mule ewes plus 100 ewe lambs jointly with my partner, on a 150- acre farm near Llandeilo.”
Gloria says she keeps the majority of her pedigree Welsh Mountain and Badger Face ewe lambs as replacements and sells the remaining few at various autumn sheep sales, alongside some of her best ram lambs. She explains her lambing system for the commercial flock: “Around 200 of the Mule ewes are put to the Texel ram and lamb indoors in early March, lambing at 185%. Approximately 75% of the Welsh ewes are purebred to provide replacement ewe lambs, and the remainder are put to a Bluefaced Leicester ram to produce replacement Mule ewe lambs. These lamb outdoors from 20th March at 160% lambing.
“I have been an NSA member for many years now and strongly believe that every sheep farmer should be, given that it specialises in looking after sheep farmer’s interests. I would have no hesitation in recommending other new members so they also receive the benefits.”
NSA is giving away a total of 18 £200 vouchers between 1st December 2015 and 4th November 2016. Anyone who qualified for the draw but is not lucky enough to win the first time has their entry rolled over to the subsequent draws, and there is no limit to the number of entries existing members have, so the more new members they recommend the higher their chance of winning.
