NSA voucher giveaway 2016: Simon Righton, Gloucestershire

11th October 2016

An impromptu decision to invest in an NSA membership at NSA Sheep 2016 in July has certainly provided a quick return for Gloucestershire farmer Simon Righton. Not only was he able to enjoy free entry to the event on the day, he’s also received a £200 voucher for JG Animal after being named a winner in NSA’s bimonthly prize draw.

NSA has teamed up with FecpakG2, Cox Agri/Richey and JG Animal Health to give away three £200 vouchers at a free prize draw giveaway every other month this year. New NSA members are automatically entered into the draw, as well as existing members who have recommend a friend or neighbour to sign up to the sheep farming organisation. Simon is one of three winners in the penultimate prize draw for 2016.

Simon says the win could not have come at a better time, as he’s already planning to buy this year’s pre-tupping minerals and vitamins for the 300-acre mixed farm he runs with his family at Dorn, Moreton-in-Marsh. Around 150-acres of the farm land is made up of permanent pasture, a proportion of which is used to host the annual Moreton Show, and the business also incorporates a farm shop and B&B.

Explaining the farms enterprises, Simon says: “Around 300 Welsh Mules are kept and put to Berrichon and Charollais tups each year. There are also 12 Gloucester Old Spot sows and 24 single suckler cows, which run with a Hereford bull. Most of the pigs and cattle are sold directly through the farm shop, alongside around a third of the lambs. The rest are mainly sold through Farmers Fresh at Kenilworth.

“We’re planning to expand the sheep enterprise in the next few years, hopefully getting the flock up to 400 breeding ewes before too long. With this flock expansion in mind, it’s a good idea to keep up with the latest news and ideas, which is one of the main reasons I decided to join NSA.”
