NSA Breakfast Club webinar: Vaccines, why we can’t get them and how to manage the implications

Date: 4th October 2023

Time: 8.30am

Location: Online

The NSA's October Breakfast Club looked into the shortage of sheep vaccines across the nation.

Although some of you may have seen our updates in recent Sheep Farmer editions and across our weekly online engagement, this webinar aims to provide a fuller update on the vaccine availability situation across the UK and gives members a chance to hear and ask questions over alternative strategies to reduce disease risk. Problems with supply exist across many vaccines, including the Clostridial and Pasteurella, abortion, and footvax and orf, with some more acute than others.

NSA have, since last year, been in regular contact with manufacturing companies to try to help resolve the shortages seen across the country. NSA have also written to MSD, VMD and Lord Benyon to try to rectify the ongoing issues in supply.  This issue has also been raised at a Ministerial level on the behalf of farmers across the country. I have included both those letters for your information.  More recently we have written to Sir Robert Goodwill as chair of the EFRA select committee suggesting this would be a helpful topic for them to investigate.

In this Breakfast Club we heared from Jonathon Statham – Chair of the Animal Health and Welfare Board for England Committee - who discussed the reasons why we are seeing a shortage across supply chains, how it might be rectified and how long this might take as well as the wider long term impacts this shortage might have across the livestock industry.

We also heared from Dr Joe Henry – specialist Beef and Sheep Vet (Black Sheep Vets) on management practices, how to mitigate long term impacts and what to do if you can’t access vaccines along with what should be classed as priority stock and how you can move towards overcoming some impacts of a vaccine shortage across industry.
