NSA Scottish Region Field Day

NSA Scotland is looking forward to welcoming members, friends and neighbours to an interactive field day this October providing advice and plentiful opportunity for discussion surrounding business development and overall flock health and wellbeing. It aims to address and demonstrate best practice concerning the issue of flock health and welfare from efficient stock handling and data collection to parasite management and disease prevention.

The region’s first Field Day will take place at Fearn Farm, Fearn, IV20 1TL by kind permission of the Scott Family and main sponsors Elanco on Tuesday 31st October 2023. Attendees will be able to view real time demonstrations with the farm’s flock and take part in discussion on the most effective use of the respective equipment and products on display.

Attendees to the event will have the chance of joining the following useful and interesting workshops throughout the day:

1. “Butchery Demonstration”, led by Gordon Newlands, QMS Brand Development Manager

This session will include a live butchery demonstration looking at the differing processing techniques and also a wider discussion on how farming practices influence the end product.

2. “Looking after your business", led by Stephen Buchan, Virgin Money, Jane Thomson, Shearwell Data and John Scott, FarmStrong Scotland

This session will include:

  • Business planning – things to consider when setting up, financial options, benchmarking
  • Sheep identification, and the collection and utilisation of data
  • Ensuring YOU are fit to farm

 3. “Maximising Available Resources”, led by Ieuan Davis and Megan Pedley, Agrimin.

This session will include a practical demonstration on the importance of minerals and bolusing alongside how to complement grazing with supplements.

 4. “Positive Health and Welfare Planning”, led by Lucy Rogers BVMS MRCVS, Foundry Vets.

This session will include discussion of key aspects to consider annually when looking after a flock, resistance to products commonly used, improving the vet and farmer relationship and efficiency vs health and welfare.

  1. “Best Practice on Farm”, led by Matt Colston Elanco Technical manager and Frank Turnbull, Techion UK Ltd.

This session will cover the NSA Zolvix Exchange and best practice management of internal parasites. It will also include a live demonstration of the use of diagnostic tools such as FecPak.

  1. “Genetics and Marketing”, led by Neil and Debbie McGowan, Incheoch Farm.

This session will cover the main aspects of improving your flock through genetic selection and sustainable practices alongside how the differing options of marketing yourself and your flock.

Collect 4 RoSA CPD points for attending.

Collect 16 AMTRA CPD points for attending.
