Tenant farmers under pressure as landowners reclaim land for economic benefit
The National Sheep Association (NSA) believes traditional farming practices could be threatened as large landowners seek to reclaim farmland in favour of economically beneficial environmental practices. At a recent meeting of the NSA Northern Region and the Farming Network farmers said they were being squeezed out of short term lets and Farm Business Tenancies (FBT) as landowners take back land, in most cases to get involved in large scale tree planting, rewilding and other environmental projects.

NSA welcomes change to SFI actions but says more could more be done to protect future food production
The National Sheep Association (NSA) has welcomed the announcement from Defra this week limiting the percentage of farm land that can put into nonproductive actions as part of applications for the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI). NSA Chief Executive Phil Stocker says: “It is a welcome relief that Defra has listened, and acted quickly to make changes that will limit farmers entering large amounts of their land into actions that have a focus away from sustainable farming and food production.

The continuing serious impact of sheep worrying by dogs revealed by latest NSA survey
Reported to be the most frequently occurring rural crime, attacks on sheep flocks by dogs, incidents known as ‘sheep worrying’, continue to plight farmers impacting animal health and welfare and farmers’ livelihoods and mental wellbeing. Following a recent National Sheep Association (NSA) survey of rural police crime teams, the sheep farming charity today (Monday 25th March) launches its annual sheep worrying by dogs awareness campaign revealing concerning findings that indicate cases continue to increase across the UK.

NSA is looking for a young female shepherd, aged between 18 and 25 years old, residing in Scotland and willing to represent the UK at the World Young Shepherds Challenge in France between Friday 25th May and Friday 1st June 2024.
