What will 2024 bring for the sheep sector – An update on Animal Health and Welfare Pathway, vet attestations and Sustainable Farming Incentives

Phil Stocker, NSA Chief Executive chaired the session and provided an update on vet attestations and what it means for advisers and farmers from December 2023.

Jimmy Lindqvist, Defra gave information on the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway.

Sam Dovey, Defra presented on SFI 2023 as well as what's currently available to farmers, particularly those involved in Upland farming. 

Mr Stocker also provided a short update on devolved nation future farming schemes.

Speaker Bios:

Sam Dovey is the Engagement & Communications lead for the SFI Pilot, which is part of the new Environmental Land Management Schemes (ELMS) being developed within Defra’s Farming & Countryside Programme.

Jimmy Lindqvist is working in partnership with the livestock sector and a wide range of academics, charities and other experts to deliver the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway, supporting continual improvement in farm animal health and welfare. That includes a programme of financial support for farmers in the pig, cattle, sheep, and poultry sectors, who improve animal health and welfare.

Phil Stocker joined the National Sheep Association as Chief Executive in 2011, after 15 years leading the Soil Associations support work for its organic farmer and grower members. Phil has 25 years of livestock and arable farming under his belt, managing several large sheep flocks including Cambridge, Lleyns, Mules, and Beulahs. In his role with NSA he is committed to the Association being recognised as the focal point for UK grassroots sheep farming issues. Looking outwards he is passionate sheep be recognised for the positive and holistic role they play in uplands and lowlands, and keen sheep farming finds a way to maintain its tradition and culture while making health, nutritional, and technical advances to meet future challenges and opportunities.
