Unsung hero rewarded for work to protect Britain’s sheep farming heritage
Bob Kennard, a sheep farmer, author, and campaigner from mid-Wales, was recognised for his unwavering work to promote and protect Britain’s native sheep breeds and products, and the supply chain that supports them at NSA Welsh Sheep this week as he was presented with the National Sheep Association (NSA) Bob Payne Unsung Hero Award for 2022.

Animal health excellence to go on show at NSA Welsh Sheep 2023
Award-winning and pioneering Welsh animal health programmes will be on show at next week’s NSA Welsh Sheep 2023 (May 16th). To be held at Red House Farm, Aberhafesp, near Newtown in Powys, NSA Welsh Sheep is the major on-farm event for the sector in Wales.

Opening Ceremony
Opening the event is Glandon Lewis, a partner at Morris Marshall and Poole with Norman Lloyd, who run Welshpool Livestock Sales. He says it’s an opportunity to welcome people from all over Wales and the UK to such a special occasion. And with Wales noted worldwide for producing quality lamb, he feels NSA Welsh Sheep is vitally important to the general public, as well as to farmers.

How NSA Welsh Sheep began
The first NSA Welsh Sheep was held in 1976 at the home of Clwyd Hughes and family, Llangwyfan Farm, Llandyrnog, Denbigh. The original programme shows that the venue was chosen ‘because of the very high standard of management’. It highlighted the integration of hill and lowland breeds on a part upland, part lowland farm.
