West Country Restaurant Holds Mutton Dinner

14th September 2015

In August 2015, the Millbrook Inn at South Pool, Kingsbridge, Devon held a Mutton Dinner - one of several now being held across the country. Here is their description of the evening.

An old gabled greenhouse at East Portlemouth was the location for a pop-up mutton supper held as both a fundraiser for the Dartmouth Food Festival and to showcase Devon mutton reared on the salt-laden cliff tops by Rebecca Hosking and Tim Green.

In keeping with the unpredictable British summer the sun may not have been shining, but the mists that rolled in over the cliffs provided a mystical romance to the evening.

The Millbrook Inn at South Pool teamed up with the Village Farm and guests were treated to a tour of the farm, where they met the Portlebury sheep and listened to an informative talk by Rebecca who raises her sheep how nature intended with the healthiest, happiest animals producing meat of the finest flavour. Then guests sat down to a sumptuous three-course meal cooked by award-winning chef Jean-Philippe Bidart.

On the menu were tasty canapés, followed by mutton prepared in three ways – leg of mutton, pulled mutton, and mutton burgers - followed by a  vibrantly coloured summer pudding with jewel-like berries picked from the farm. Music came from jazz singer Louise Parker and her two-piece band, which provided the perfect accompaniment to the meal.
