NSA welcomes possible joint venture to promote Scottish lamb

31st July 2015

NSA Scottish Region met this week with the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders Association (SFMTA) to explore the possibilities of a joint venture to promote Scotch lamb. NSA felt it was vitally important to enter into discussions regarding promotion of lamb with the Federation of Meat Traders, given that the organisation represents some 420 craft butchers across Scotland, who have the ability to innovate, inform and communicate directly with the consumer.

Sybil MacPherson, NSA Scottish Region Chairman, says: “The key is finding ways to increase the consumption of lamb in Scotland and to convince the consumer to use lamb as a regular part of their diet.”

Discussions centred on how to change the mind set of consumers, how to encourage them to try new dishes and recipe’s, including meat balls, lamb burgers, lamb grill sticks, kebabs, lamb sausages and using lamb as a main ingredient for curries.

Perth butcher, President of SFMTA, Beaton Lindsay added: “Butchers would love to sell more Scotch lamb and we welcome this partnership.  It is important to stimulate the taste for lamb and have customers returning week in week out for the product.”

As a starting point, the possibilities of jointly running lamb tasting opportunities in highly population town centres on a trial basis were discussed. Following this enthusiastic and productive meeting we hope to announce the first tasting venue very soon.
